HARRIS TWEEDTo this day Harris Tweed is woven in the homes of crofters Living on the Isles of Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides on looms similar to the one in the picture.
The wool is spun and dyed in the mills then taken to the weavers home to be woven into the luxurious tweed that has become increasingly popular in recent times. Once woven the cloth is taken back to mill where it washed and inspected. If it meets the exacting standards of the Harris Tweed Authority it is then stamped with the Orb symbol, indicating the authenticity and quality of the product. The cloth can now be sold the world over and turned into many unique and fascinating products. |
At Thistle Fairy Designs we use Tweeds that have been designed and woven by small independant weavers, using brighter colours and more modern designs.
They will usually weave approx 30-60 metres of any one cloth, and sell this directly onto small craft businesses and individuals. Once each designer has applied their own unique designs and styles the products produced are rare one off creations that will not be found in the mainstream market.
By purchasing from Thistle Fairy Designs you are assured that you will have a truly unique bespoke product that with the right care and attention should last for many years to come.
